Happy New Year! How did you ring in the new year? I did it sitting on my couch with my husband with a glass of wine in hand watching the ball drop on the TV. It was AMAZING! I remember back when I wanted to have BIG plans for NYE and stayed out well past midnight celebrating with family and friends. Now it is a struggle to stay awake through midnight. As a family, we certainly seem to be starting it out right since everyone around us seems to be sick (yes I am knocking on wood as I write this). Hopefully that continues to be true!

Life without a goal is like flying a plane not knowing where you want to land.

With the new year always comes talk about resolutions and goals we have for it. We look back on last year and reflect on what we did right and what we want to change. Setting resolutions (or goals) is important. It helps us to point our life in the direction it needs to go in. Every year, we plan, do, review, and adjust for the next year. If you didn’t accomplish everything you set out to do last year, its ok! This is a NEW YEAR! Figure out what went wrong and adjust your plan for this year so you can reach that goal. If you accomplished your goals for last year, first of all YAY YOU! Now you get to create new goals for this year. Maybe they build off of last years or maybe they are all new… the sky is the limit!

If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.

To get to where we want to be at the end of this year, we need goals both big and small. The big ones that always seem to be popular tend to involve career moves, health and fitness, family planning, and more. Aiming high with your goals allows you to challenge yourself throughout the year. If your goal is simply to wake up on time each day, you won’t have much to strive for. You don’t need 25 HUGE goals for the year… a few big ones will work just fine.

Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction. -JFK

Goals alone, no matter big or small, are not enough. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Even if you look at the goal above about waking on time, you have to plan to achieve it. You have to set an alarm to wake you up or you will certainly not be successful. The same is true for the bigger goals. You need a plan to achieve your goals.

Writing this blog post is a great example of needing a plan to achieve the goal. My goal was to write a blog post about why goals are important and how goals and plans go hand in hand. So, I knew what I wanted to write about but had I not made an outline {plan} prior to sitting down to write it out, you would most certainly be lost by now. If my goal this year is to grow my business, I need a plan that I put into practice everyday to make that happen. Otherwise it is easy to get sidetracked and veer off the path completely. Your goal and your plan go hand-in-hand. You can’t have one without the other. If I just say my goal is to grow my business but I don’t have an actionable plan to make that goal a reality then it is just a wish. If I eat healthy and exercise but don’t have an end-game in mind, I don’t have a purpose behind my actions. A lack of purpose will eventually lead to a lack of desire to do.

Action without vision is only passing time, vision without action is merely daydreaming, but vision with action can change the world. -Nelson Mandela

Tips for setting your goals this year:

WRITE THEM DOWN! It is so much easier to ignore a plan or a goal that may require work if it is just in your head. Writing it down also allows you to adjust the plan when necessary because lets be real, life happens and plans have to be adaptable.

SHARE THEM! Nothing makes you more motivated than sharing your goals with the people you do life with. That vulnerability will be a motivating factor to accomplish your goals ALL YEAR! Think about it… if I make a goal and I share it with family and friends, a) I will want to prove to them that I CAN do it, and b) they will help hold me accountable if I start to veer off the path away from that finish line. It’s a win-win!

So since I believe in walking the walk, here are my goals for 2018: I have some pretty BIG goals for this year. I want to grow my businesses. I want to be a GOLD ambassador with Plexus Worldwide before 2018 is done. I want my Etsy shop to be turning at least a livable-wage profit by the end of 2018. I want to lose weight and get my health in check. I want to lose at least 20 pounds but my most important health goal of 2018 is to lose 10% of my body fat. I want to be more organized with my time and devote enough to my relationship with God, my family, and to my business. All of those are attainable. I can and WILL accomplish them all this year. They are lofty but with the right plan, I can get to where I want to be by the end of this year.

#TLDR: Make goals and plan out how you are going to achieve them. It will make this year SO much more fulfilling and enjoyable. Mine are ^^^.
